FUE Hair Transplanting

(Follicular Unit Extraction)

Millions of men and women in the United States live with thinning hair and baldness. Loss of hair is one of the most difficult cosmetic issues to live with because it affects a person’s self-image so strongly. People feel that others find them less attractive. Diminished self-confidence and depression can often result from premature balding. Follicular unit transplantation is a hair restoration technique, where a patient’s hair is transplanted in naturally occurring groups of 1 to 4 hairs, called follicular units. Follicular units also contain sebaceous glands, nerves, a small muscle, and occasional fine vellus hairs.

As a result, hair transplantation is perhaps the method that alters the image the most among all esthetic applications. Patients with baldness appear to be 10–15 years older than their real ages. Therefore, hair transplantation enables a patient to look and feel much younger. The positive attitudes of the patients after transplantation almost always leads to increased optimism in their professional and private lives.

History of FUE Hair Restoration

Follicular unit extraction was first described in the 1980s  in Japan, where a small 1-mm needle was introduced for extracting follicular units. This was a change from previous procedures where a strip of scalp was removed and transplanted in a balding section. Follicular unit extraction takes considerable time and expense to learn and to develop skills to a high standard. Follicular unit extraction generally has a quicker patient recovery time and significantly lower post-operative discomfort. Additionally, the risk of long term nerve damage, leading to chronic numbness and/or pain in the donor area is significantly reduced with FUE.

Causes of Hair Loss

Why Am I Losing My Hair? Hair loss is typically related to one or more of the following factors:

  • Family history (heredity)
  • Hormonal changes and medical conditions
  • Medications and supplements
  • Chronic Stress
  • Certain hairstyles and treatments

How Can FUE Transplantation Help Me?

The hair on the back and sides of the head are generally not as affected by hormones or genetic trends as the hair on the top of the scalp. The transplantation of this hair results in a much longer-lasting effect.

Using skill, artistry, and training, Dr. Gaines will create small incisions in your scalp where you want more hair. These incisions are called recipient sites and they’re carefully chosen to give you optimal results. The individual follicular units are placed into the recipient sites in the same direction and growth pattern of your hair to ensure seamless blending.

Follicular units containing 1-2 hairs are placed in the front, toward your hairline, while the units with 3-4 hairs are placed on the top of your head and at the crown so you have a natural-looking pattern of density and thickness.

Is a hair transplant permanent? Yes. In fact, that’s the main reason why hair transplantation is considered the most effective option for restoring your hair. These transplanted hairs are resistant to the hormone that causes hair loss and are considered permanent.

The tiny incisions left behind after the follicular units are extracted will heal completely in a few days. Three months after the procedure, you should begin to notice new hair growth. After six months, you should notice significant regrowth, at which point your native and transplanted hair will continue to grow naturally.

Additional Benefits of Hair Transplantation

Hair transplantation may someday be replaced with gene therapies and stem cell therapies in the future. However, the most effective method for treating irreversible hair losses is currently hair transplantation. Hair transplantation has many positive effects compared to other treatments of hair loss.

Among these, one of the most important is the marked improvement of forehead wrinkles in the patients undergoing hair transplantation. The hair transplantation produces the effect of Botox on the forehead.

Patients with migraines undergoing hair transplantation often find that migraine attacks decrease markedly and the patients may be able to discontinue medications. Many unknown useful effects of hair transplantation are yet to be discovered.
