Common Types of Dermal Fillers

Common Types of Dermal Fillers from LifeGaines Medical and Aesthetics in Boca Raton, FLDermal fillers can correct a range of skin conditions and signs of aging. Whether you are interested in fuller lips or softening wrinkles and folds, there are multiple dermal filler options. Our med spa technicians will recommend a filler based on your needs and budget.

Understanding dermal fillers

Botox® and dermal fillers are often confused since each involves an injection into the skin. Dermal fillers are, however, best for facial fat loss and static wrinkles, meaning wrinkles that do not arise from repetitive motions such as smiling, laughing, etc. These issues are the natural result of collagen loss due to aging or immunodeficiencies, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Common uses and applications

In particular, fillers can help achieve fuller lips, cheeks, and under-eye hollows. Some patients opt for fillers to contour their chins or soften the backs of their hands. A med spa technician may also recommend dermal fillers to correct certain acne scars.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a variety of dermal fillers for these uses. Most tend to work within the hour. However, some will take up to four weeks to completely settle into the skin. This depends more on the patient than the filler itself.

Dermal filler types

With so many fillers on the market, it can take time to choose one. A helpful tip is to pick a filler with a realistic maintenance schedule for the patient. Most dermal fillers are temporary because they are made from materials naturally found in the body, meaning treatment results will fade with time. Below are some of the most common filler types and how often a patient can expect to return to the med spa for a follow-up injection.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers

Hyaluronic acid, or HA, fillers are common among med spa patients. This naturally occurring acid hydrates the skin, helping it maintain a youthful appearance. Many HA fillers are available, but each lasts between six months and one year.

Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) fillers

These temporary fillers contain a substance naturally found in bones: Calcium hydroxylapatite, or CaHA. Since the substance is thicker than that of an HA filler, the body takes longer to break it down. Results typically last about one year.

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) injections

PLLA is a synthetic substance, but the body is able to break it down over time. For reference, PLLA is often used to make dissolvable stitches. As a filler, PLLA may both restore volume and stimulate collagen production. Results tend to last at least two years.

Injectable polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)

Injectable PMMA is a permanent filler. This is the only FDA-approved dermal filler that will not decompose in the body. PMMA injections contain synthetic polymers and, with certain brands, tiny amounts of collagen. While the body will break down collagen, it cannot break down the polymers. Results are, therefore, permanent.
